Safer streets advocacy

PATHS advocates for transportation systems designed around the protection of human life.

PATHS testified before Philadelphia City Council in February 2025 and participated in a Pennsylvania Senate policy hearing on hit-and-run crashes and the proposed Jay Alert system in 2026.

Helping children ride with protection, knowledge, and confidence

Helmet Heroes is a pediatric injury-prevention initiative within PATHS for Barbara, created by CHOP pediatric residents and faculty.

Created by Drs. Kelly McNult and Colleen Lynch, the program combines access to bicycle helmets with education for children, caregivers, and healthcare teams.

Participating children receive

• A properly sized bicycle helmet
• Guidance on correct fit
• Education about consistent helmet use

Participating clinical staff receive training for effective bicycle-safety anticipatory guidance. The project has been shared through CHOP’s Primary Care Perspectives podcast, CHOP Education Day, and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors’ 2026 meeting, and was recognized as a 2026 CASA Philadelphia Champions for Children honoree.

Education and partnerships

PATHS welcomes conversations with schools, clinics and hospitals, universities, employers, neighborhood organizations, public agencies, researchers, foundations, and traffic-safety organizations.

Presentation topics can include traffic violence as a public-health issue, pediatric bicycle safety, clinical advocacy, safe systems, and evidence-based transportation policy.
